SL 2011 FP1 running in a TS environment on Server 2008 R2, SQL 2008 R2 on the backend.
Okay, let's see if I can lay this out without being to confusing.
One of the companies I am supporting uses Serial Numbers for a certain segments of their inventory, they have the IN Setup Screen Set up to assign SNs upon receipt, no expiry, no prefix, user enterable and a 24 character serial number.
They have the serial numbers set up on the product class they use serial numbers for as well, set the same way. Default for the product class is to serialize the inventory item.
Here is the rub...
When they raise part numbers in that particular product class, sometimes the inventory item should not be serialized and the person mastering the part number does not change the serial number drop down to "none".
So they order the part, and upon receipt SL automatically assigns it a SN, 24 characters long....and they don't discover it until they go to use the inventory (service, sales orders, projects, work orders, whatever). At which point they have to jump through a bunch of hoops to fix the inventory item and make it "none".
What they are asking me to do, is find a way for the receipt screen to prompt them to enter the serial number upon receipt, instead of auto-assigning the 24 character SN. This way, if a part number is mastered incorrectly, they will discover it prior to the receipt, when it is much easier to fix.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance...
Chris
This sounds like a customization.
If they take the default OFF the product class to automatically serialize inventory items, they can set this up on the Inventory Item itself (whether it’s serialized or not).
Doing that alone would alleviate a lot of their problem. But it means that when an Inventory Item is created with that Product class, they would have to determine manually if it’s lot/ser tracked or not.
