RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

I just wanted to drop and and say THANK YOU! all for the solutions offered. I finished the live data upgrade from:

    GP 7.5 > GP 9.0 > GP 2010 &

    Windows Server 2003 > Windows Server 2008 &

    Pervasive V8 > MS SQL MSDE SP4 > MS SQL 2008

this past week. everything went off without a hitch.

Now to start planning for the upgrade to get everything current

RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

I wanted to add something to the long checklist that Harry published in this thread, because it bites me every time I do a major GP upgrade and move the entire setup to a new SQL server (and forget about this)...

One of the most annoying (and dangerous) step that runs when you upgrade the companies with the GP Utilities is the fact that after completing the SQL objects migration in every Company DB, GP Utilities automatically starts the upgrade of your deployed Excel & SSRS reports, no question asked.... This is potentially very destructive, as it replaces without any warning the existing entries in the [DYNAMICS].[dbo].[syDeployedReports] table and also [DYNAMICS].[dbo].[sySrsReports], which most certainly points to your existing production system.

The best is to flush the content of those tables (especially the 1st one) before you run GP Utilities, this way it is not attempted to update any reports. You can always re-deploy properly all the Excel & SSRS reports once your GP is upgraded to the latest release with the Report Wizard in the system administration of GP :

Administration >> Setup >> System >> Reporting Tools Setup

It may be wise to take a backup of those tables before you delete the content, as you may have custom reports deployed that you want to re-add after the upgrade.. Copy the content to an Excel workbook, so you can easily paste back into the SQL table the missing records.

    :-)

Not judging the application, as I don't know the capabilities of Exact Max.. it might well be on par with GP Manufacturing..

RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

    Thanks Mark for the details.

In which order did you upgrade the applications ? Max or GP first ? Would it have made a difference if GP would have been migrated to the new server first, thus creating the company DB's to which Max could then connect ?...

Harry outlined a very detailed checklist for the best way to 'migrate' a GP environment to a new server, and key here is the order in which the databases are restored and upgraded, especially when 3rd party apps are involved.

And yes, I know that we would be better off using the full featured GP package but the time to re-enter all the parts costing and bills of materials is to great to consider at this time.

Exact Max is a manufacturing package that integrates with GP.  Max handles the sales order / purchase order / inventory / bill of materials and GP is used for AP, AR and GL functions.  The upgrade that converts Max from pervasive to MS SQL pushed the data to MS SQL and uses the company identifier for the database name.  SO now i have to programs that want to use the same database name which isn't allowed.  I suspect I will need to create a new company and attach the database to that, then delete the old one but i have to investigate if that will mess up the integration before heading down that road.

RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

    Hi Mark,

What is the Exact Max 5.0 for an application ? though you can share your GP SQL server instance with other applications, it's easier to start with the GP setup first and once the SQL instance is created, you import/restore other apps databases...

PS: from this page (www.exactsoftware.com/.../DocView.aspx ) I could figure out that Exact Max must be some kind of add-on to GP.. though it recommends at least SQL 2008 SP1..

RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

Ok guys, I'm coming back to the well one more time.  the Upgrade I am attempting is still as described above.

Windows Server 2003 R2, Exact Max 4.0 on Pervasive V8, GP 9.0 on MS SQL 2000 MSDE sp4

    to

Windows Server 2008 R2, Exact Max 5.0 on MS SQL 2008. GP 2010 SP4 on MS SQL 2008

when i upgrade Max it creates a company database named AVC.  Then when I attach the Great Plains databases DYNAMICS and AVC, I can't, because the name is already in use.  If i attach as AVCgp the GP utilities company data conversion fails. If I rename the Max database to maxAVC and attch the GP database as AVC the GP Utilities conversion works fine. So i have both Max and GP working on the system, just not at the same time :(  so time to roll up the sleeves and get back in there, just hoping for a little insight from the best help I have found on the subject.

RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

    Mark -

It sounds like you wound up doing something like Beat recommended above. It is typical when moving from older versions of SQL to newer ones to back up or detach a database on an old (SQL 2000) server, and restore/attach the databases to a new (SQL 2008) server.

SQL will automatically upgrade the database, but will not automatically change the SQL compatibility level for the databases when restored/attached. To do this, go to Database Properties, and Options Tab, and set the compatibility level to the new version, so an upgrade/install of a newer version of Dynamics GP can be installed and pointed at this/these databases.

RE: GP 9.0 to GP 2010 Upgrade

Just wanted to run an issue by you guys regarding moving GP databases to a new SQL server.

The one issue that has been standing in the way of upgrading from GP9.0 on Windows Server 2003 and MS SQL 2000 MSDE to GP 2010 on Windows Server 2008 and MS SQL 2008 Express has been the inability to upgrade MSDE Rel A to Service pack 4.  Every way i have tried it, i get the ' cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy" error message.  I finally installed a new instance of MS SQL 2000 MSDE and attached the DB's to the SP4 Instance.  Created an ODBC entry for the new instance and so far all is well. still in the data verification stage.

Question is, Is this a reasonable method to bypass my SP4 upgrade  issue?
