    Mark,

Here is a checklist for upgrading from GP 9 to version 2010

Create/Validate Admin account for CustomerSource access for client

Check Dynamics GP 2010 Upgrade Hot Topic for supported upgrade path.

Check System Requirements for SQL/Workstation and Server Compatibility

Obtain Dynamics GP Media (2010 DVD)

Obtain Dynamics GP Keys for 2010 from Customersource/Partnersource

Obtain SQL Server Media/keys (SQL Server 2008R2)

    Obtain FRx Installation media (6.7)

Contact ISVs/Third Party Vendors (Mekorma, Cogsdale, CINCH, Nolan, WennSoft, etc.)

Acquire Compatibility Info and Media from ISVs

Create Domain/Machine Admin Credentials for Technical Installer User

Run File Maintenance / Check Links on current version

Install SQL Server / Current Release

    Install SQL Server Reporting Services

    Validate SSRS Install

    Install Dynamics ERP

    Backup Databases (Dynamics and Company)

Back Up Application Customizations  (Create Package Files)

Back Up Report Customizations (Copy Reports.dic)

Back Up FRx reports (export to TDB file)

Optional - if moving Dynamics ERP to New Environment

    Move Databases to new machine

    Restore Databases

Run Scripts to Capture Logins from Old Server

Run Script to Create logins on New Server

    Set DYNSA Password

    GP: sp_changeowner to DYNSA

GP: Grant.sql script against  GB Databases

    Backup the Databases

Perform Database Maintenance - Run Upgrade Utilities

    Enter Registration Keys

    Install Hot fixes Now

    Install FRx 6.7

    Import TDB file with reports

Share Reports Folder on Network / Set Security Correctly (Read and Execute Permissions)

Import Reports.dic reports from copied dictionary

Create Installation Package for workstation installation/install software on terminal server

    Install Workstations

    Test Workstations

Harry's very detailed response is spot-on. I think your real issue is going to be the hardware platform, so here are the short steps I would attempt first before applying the instructions Harry supplied:

    1. Move your existing GP 9 installation to the new VM Server 2008 hardware using the same SQL 2000 MSDE. In this stage, the ONLY change should be the hardware. Verify that you can access the databases and Companies in GP.

    2. Unsure if you need to go this route, but I would upgrade from SQL 2000 MSDE to SQL Express 2005 (which updates your databases) and then to SQL Express 2008 (which will provide more updates), and verify access to your Company db's through GP 9 along the way.

    3. Once you have everything operating on your new VM with Server 2008 and SQL Express 2008, then I would look at the system/Server/SQL requirements and instructions for GP 2010. Bear in mind that support (Year-End Updates) for GP 2010 ends in October 2015.

    Hi Mark,

I'm wondering why you would want to go the route of SQL server "Express" ? you need to be aware that the Express version, though being free, doesn't offer the same capabilities than a full version (even the STD one is much better in terms of tools and options). One thing that strikes me is that MS can put the Express version in GP specs or requirement to run in a production environment...

Thanks Harry, and everyone else who replied.  On my VM that has GP 9.0 running properly, i am attempting to install SQL server 2008 R2 as an upgrade and keep getting an error due to the installer not finding the Microsoft Great Plains supplied SQL Server 2000 MSDE sp2 installation.  after some research i have investigated a 32 vs 64 bit mismatch and a MSDE service pack issue. I believe it's a service pack issue but when I attempt to install service pack 3a or 4 it errors our on SQL server 2000 not installed on this machine.  Any ideas? or more likely, tell me exactly what Im doing wrong lol.

What is the exact error you receive? Are you still going from SQL 2000 MSDE to SQL 2008 Express? Please look here and let me know if this is your issue: support.microsoft.com/.../960126

when installing 2008 as an upgrade, i get the "no features selected to install" message

When installing sp3a or sp4 to SQL 2000 SP2 i get "SQL server 2000 is not installed on this machine. Setup will now exit"

    Mark,

You should be able to 'upgrade' your Dynamics GP databases simply by backing them up from your old SQL 2000 server and restore them on a newly installed (different VM) SQL 2005 or 2008 server (I'd even go to 2012 if you can, less stress for future GP upgrades).

Don't forget the set the compatibility DB version on your restored GP dB's to the current SQL version.

1st error seems pretty straight forward. Please remember: SQL Setup cannot upgrade from 32-bit platform to 64-bit platform: cross-platform upgrade is not supported. You will need to upgrade your existing platform to continue. If you are on x86, use the SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe installation.

Just wanted to run an issue by you guys regarding moving GP databases to a new SQL server.

The one issue that has been standing in the way of upgrading from GP9.0 on Windows Server 2003 and MS SQL 2000 MSDE to GP 2010 on Windows Server 2008 and MS SQL 2008 Express has been the inability to upgrade MSDE Rel A to Service pack 4.  Every way i have tried it, i get the ' cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy" error message.  I finally installed a new instance of MS SQL 2000 MSDE and attached the DB's to the SP4 Instance.  Created an ODBC entry for the new instance and so far all is well. still in the data verification stage.

Question is, Is this a reasonable method to bypass my SP4 upgrade  issue?
