GP Upgrade to 2016 R2

Hi all,

I was hoping to get some feedback regarding upgrade experiences.  We are a medium sized non-profit currently running GP 2013 R2. The plan is to upgrade to a newer version (most likely 2016 R2), but we wanted first to gauge the process and user experience before making the leap. It would be helpful if anyone could provide insight as to the challenges faced/overcome, whether the upgrade was done using in-house staff or an outside consultant, and just how the overall experience was and whether or not you are happy with the version you upgraded to (if you think it was worth the trouble). We would be installing the upgrade on MSW10 and intend to update/purchase additional reporting tools to work with GP, as well as maintaining current integration processes in place with our grants management platform.  This community has been a great resource for us over the past couple of years. I appreciate any response sent.

Regards

    Hi,

I am a consultant and have done many upgrades from 2013 to 2016. One thing that is the most important is to check the upgrade path and make sure the build you are on will upgrade directly to the version/build you want to upgrade to. Below is the current upgrade paths; be SURE to read the notes.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie

    Hi,

As Leslie replied, if you follow the upgrade paths provided by Microsoft you shouldn't encounter much issues.

    However, you said :
but we wanted first to gauge the process and user experience before making the leap. It would be helpful if anyone could provide insight as to the challenges faced/overcome, whether the upgrade was done using in-house staff or an outside consultant, and just how the overall experience was
I'm curious what you expect as a response.. because every setup & deployment, every customer,  is different.. and just based on the few details you provide (grants management), it's not easy to provide an answer. We don't know anything about your integration with external application, nor if you use any other ISV or 3rd party products. Financial reporting is also another topic that can become very large, depending on the budget$$ you're ready to spend.

All in all, there isn't much differences in the visual experience from 2013 to 2016, but under the hood there has been a lot of improvements between the 2 versions.

Handling the upgrade from inside or outside really depends on the skill-sets you have onsite within the available resources (IT & Finance mostly, but also Production & other users). Is your current SQL server on par with the system requirements of 2016R2 ? or does it need an upgrade ? There is more involved in a major release upgrade then just going down a spec sheet with upgrade paths..

If you have plenty of time ahead of you, you can start building a new TEST environment and setup the same configuration that is currently in use for Production, and then try to upgrade to new GP version. But if your time is limited and you have schedule constrains, then you'd probably better off with seeking assistance from your partner or seasoned consultant.
