Detailed Audit Log

Hello,

I just joined my company and I noticed that they have not activated the detailed audit log, they only have simple audit trail, I would really like to activate the detailed audit log.

My question is does activating the detailed audit log will noticeably affect the GP system / GP server performance? is there any precautions that I should take before activating the detailed audit log?

Thanks.

The answer depends on your environment...

How many users do you have?  The more users, the more audit data is written.  I have turned thse on for 50-75 user sites and had some speed issues.

How much disk space do you have?  Audit trails can create large tables fast.  If you are low on disk space, you may have a problem.  Under 25% free space on the drive with the SQL data base will cause system slow down

I concur with Richard. I've seen Audit Trails bog a system down with just 10 users. It also depends on how many logging actions you activate in Audit Trails setup and whether or not you have a routine to periodically truncate the logs.

Are we talking about Audit Trails or Activity Tracking?   Both can slow things up and be database size monsters.   The reason that I am making the distinction is that Audit Trails is now dropped from the GP price list and is only available via the 3rd Party developer.    The real question is what do you want to track, if you know what you are wanting to track then the decision is made a lot easier.   Do you care about who modified a Vendor record and when?  Or are you focused on who/when was a GL entry posted?   Just things to think about.

    Thanks all for your help.

The kind of information I would like to find in the audit log varies from the life cycle of a transaction (created, edited, re-edited...etc.), also I may need to check the trail of a certain user during a specific day.

We currently have 30 concurrent users, I do not need the audit log to stay for years I can simply truncate it every end of year.

I think we have more than 25% of space storage also.

    So any suggestions?
