Dynamics GP Migration Tool

Hello,

As a test we setup a new blank company in Dynamics 365 Business Central and wanted to try the migration tools to bring in Accounts, Customers, Vendors and Items. We are on GP2018 and used the export within Dynamics GP to create the CSV file. When we try to use this in Dynamics 365 Business Central, nothing happens, no errors, it just keeps asking for the file, but nothing is ever imported. I just tried to do the COA all by it self and it does nothing. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong and if any additional information is needed.

Thanks,

Joe

Thanks Janelle and AJ for the information. I greatly appreciate it. Logging out/in was indeed the issue. We are a Microsoft Partner and have a great deal of experience with Dynamics GP and this is our first go around of doing a migration to D365BC. We figured we would try it on our own implementation to get our feet wet.

    Thanks again,

    Joe

I am very familiar with the GP migration tool as we have been a GP partner for 18 years and also work with Business Central.  I had a similar behavior when performing a data migration with the GP tool, and the solution was very simple.  We logged out of the session, logged back in, and went directly to the import window. The import then worked properly.  I don't know whether this will work for you, but it's worth a try.

I agree with AJ's assessment of the Microsoft migration tool.  It likely won't get you everything that you are looking for unless your implementation is very basic.  It does, however, do a pretty good job translating your GP data into BC data.  My recommendation is to use the migration tool to get your base information into BC.  Then use the new BC company to do testing and get familiar with the new system.  After you have learned the system, however, you will find it best to start over with a brand new company and build it from scratch using the config tools.

I recommend that you work with your Dynamics Partner on this, as migrating from GP to BC is no small feat.  Good Luck!

    RE: Dynamics GP Migration Tool

    Hi Joe,

I'm not familiar with the construct of the GP export (the columns, order of columns, etc.), but if you are using the Microsoft created extension to import data from GP, you will need to download the template from Business Central's Data Migration wizard (after selecting GP as the import source), populate it, and then upload that file.

If you use the search functionality to navigate to the Data Migration Overview page, you might be able to see an error message / status on the file you tried to upload, but even if you don't, I wouldn't spend a lot of time on that. It's not likely that the column layout of that csv file is consistent with what Business Central's template has.

Also, in my experience, the GP and QuickBooks imports that Microsoft's extensions offer are not comprehensive. As a consultant, I would recommend you to consider using the Configuration Packages (RapidStart) in Business Central. Here, you can bring data into more tables and fields, including open AP, open AR, etc.

I hope this helps. If my response has answered your question, please verify by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"
