GP on Terminal Server 2008

ReportReport

I am running GP 10 (fully patched) on my Windows 2008 Terminal Servers and providing access via TS Web access and a TS desktop icon.

I am having an issue, which I can reproduce on all terminal servers, including my test systems, whereby some dialog boxes do not appear and to the use GP is "frozen".  I determined if the user hits "enter" this at least acknowledges the dialog box and the user can continue.

I also run Citrix Presentation Server for remote users, and this is not an issue on Citrix systems.  This is not an issue on fat client installations.

Anyone seen this or have any suggestions?  I don't want to purchase Citrix licenses due to the cost, and it should work in Terminal Server in any case.

I have reported this to Microsoft support but as of yet do not have a solution.

Anyone else using TS 2008 seeing this?  I can provide steps to replicate the error if necessary.

Tom

Would it be that dialog boxes are appearing off screen? Since the user does not see them -- because they are off screen -- it gives the appearance that the application is frozen. When this happens, have you tried pressing the ALT+S for the Save button on the dialogs, or ALT+C for Cancel, or ALT+D for the delete? You can also try ALT+Y for the Yes button and ALT+N for the No button.

    Just a guess.

The problem is some dialog boxes are yes/no some ok some cancel/proceed sort of boxes.  What happens is the main window becomes a bit distorted, as if there is something they should be seeing (the dialog box).

I hope Microsoft comes back with a fix, not a "we are working on it".  Right now my support incident seems to be going between the terminal server and Great Plains team.  I'm leaning toward it being a TS issue.  I tested it again on my Citrix system and I cannot replicate it (dialog boxes appear as expected).

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Tom,

We have customers running GP 10.0 on Windows 2008 TS and have not seen this issue.  Can you list the steps to reproduce this?

    Thanks!

    Certainly, here you go:

Log into GP as you normally would.  We provide access via TS Web.

Select Purchasing from the left options.

    Select Transaction Entry.

Within the Payables Transaction Entry screen, select a vendor ID.

Within the Payables Transaction Entry screen, enter a number next to Purchases.

Within the Payables Transaction Entry screen, select the Distributions button.

Within the Paybles Transaction Entry Distribution screen, do nothing but select OK.

This is where a pop-up should appear alerting the user to an error.  On Terminal server I see a sort of translucent area where it should be, but it does not appear.  If you, from this point, hit enter, you still have focus on that window and can cancel out.

This is one example.  This same window type does not appear elsewhere when they should.

Version is 10.00.1328 if that matters.

     Thanks for helping.

Aha!  Have you seen this note on the GP 10.0 system requirements:

**IMPORTANT**There is currently an outstanding issue with using Microsoft Dynamics GP as a RemoteApp program via TS Web Access or as a standard RemoteApp on Microsoft Windows Server 2008. Due to this issue, it is recommended to only use a Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 machine. This issue is currently being investigated.

Yes, I did see that.  That document is not very recent and some fairly large support packs have been released since then, and I thought this would have been resolved.

That disclaimer is weak and a cop-out if anything from Microsoft.  This is a Microsoft product running on a Microsoft product.  MS needs to get this resolved - now.  Also, remote desktop is "old school" and even MS is recommending against it for general distribution.

This works just fine on Citrix, so I know the remote access concept works with this product.  Unless Citrix, Microsoft is extremely slow to release product specific updates for Terminal Server.

    Tom,

Don't shoot the messenger!  :-)  I agree with what you are saying.  What I am saying is that this is a known issue.  In fact, to make it into that requirements document, I would think it's a pretty wide-spread issue.

Should Microsoft fix this asap?  Absolutely.  Would I recommend anyone use this in production until it's fixed?  Nope.  Just my 2 cents.

Sorry - didn't mean to be too gruff.  I tried to have our agency tons of money by going Terminal Server 2008 native, not using Citrix on top of it, and it looks like it was a mistake.

My main issue is really failure on Microsoft's part to address this.  Even my "elevated" support call from several days ago has yet to receive any sort of response from Microsoft.  TS 2008 has been out for 1+ year, GP 10 for longer.

I used to work for a large governement agency and when we talked Microsoft fixed things for us.  Since I know work for a non-profit, we don't need to be bothered with, I suppose.

The option of installing fat clients on all of our users gives me palpitations.....

Understood the pain. However, having a workaround is better than not having any options and in your case it seems the options are a) using ICA, or b) using Remote Desktop. In addition, I would get a hold of the Escalation Engineer you have been working with on a regular basis to follow up on the progress of the fix. This way, you can keep your users' expectations in check. My experience tells me that users are less sympathetic when they have no options, as supposed to having a workaround.

I am awaiting reponse from MS as to escalation status. I just contacted MS and was told it's not fully escalated yet, whatever that means.

Remote desktop it is.  What a bummer.  I had just perfected the web environment.

I'm also going to try R2 server, since that just came out.  There are supposedly TS improvements.

All, your comments are greatly appreciated and I'll follow up whenever MS provides more information.
