M365 Sales - Migrating solution update to Production as Managed

I have a solution, Opportunity Fields, version 1.0.0.9 as managed in production environment.  An updated solution version 2.0.0.7 was recently pushed to production as managed and the default actions selected, "Upgrade" and "Maintain Customizations".  There were 6 fields that had different data types in the newer version and we had to remove these fields from the solution in order to delete them from production first before attempting to push the solution with the updated fields.
 
The issue is we're waiting for the versions to merge/upgrade in order to continue our migration.  How long would it take for this to complete?  Are there scenarios where the process wouldn't complete?

    To clarify, we removed the 6 fields and dependencies first from an unmanaged Opportunity Fields solution before exporting the solution as managed to production.  To date, the two solutions still had not merged.
     
    I also tried exporting as Stage for Upgrade and then clicking on solution 1.0.0.9 and clicked "Apply Solution Upgrade" and this did not resolve the issue.  
     
    Would someone please advise?
