Installing GP on Separate Database and Application Servers

I know that MS recommends installing the GP databases on a dedicated database server.  I believe though that most businesses install the GP application (server client) on the database server as well.  Our production control group would like us to completely separate the database from the application and put the two on separate servers.  It appears that this can be accomplished through the ODBC connection established during the initial setup.  I would like to ask if there are any downsides to doing this.  Also, would installing any of the following on the "application server" (separate from the database server) pose any problems?

  • Integration Manager
  • FRx
  • Forecaster
  • Greenshades
  • Advanced HR/Payroll

Would this cause issues for Business Portal?

I have not experienced any problems related to this except you have to make sure that Folders in application server should have full user access for all users.

Re: Installing GP on Separate Database and Application Servers

    Hi Devin,

There are no issues with not having a local install of GP on the database server. We have many customers who have just MSSQL running on a dedicated server with no install of the Dynamics GP installation files. Additionally, we have instances of the Business Portal application running on its own dedicated server. There should be no issues eithre with FRx or Forecaster. I can't vouch for Greenshades or HR/Payroll, although I can't see why there would be any issues with eithre application not being installed on the database server.

The fact that an ODBC can be created during the install isn't that relevant to your query above, since you can create an ODBC yourself (ie you can install the application files without asking the install to set up an ODBC...and add one yourself later). If you need help setting up an ODBC, post here again.

    Hope this helps.
