this could be nearly everything. Do you have any logs with usefull error messages?

Please give us more details on this generic error, like kind of repro steps, then only community can help. If you on CRM 2013 on premise, do verify the event logs by logging into the Server where your CRM was installed and go to the below path in the server to see event logs and check the log recorded when you were performing this action in CRM.
Start--> Administrative tools --> Event viewer--> Expand windows logs on the left side -->Application
Hope this helps...
