Outlook Client vs New Outlook App V9? - November 2017

We are in the process of rolling out O365 and Customer Engagement Plan (CRM v9). While using/testing the Outlook App, all users are experiencing the same errors (screen shots below). Microsoft is suggesting we use the outlook client with version 9? Our understanding has always been that Dynamics 365 App for Outlook replaced the Outlook Client that’s now deprecated.

To confirm: In my research I read that the outlook client is deprecated in 9.0 - as of July 2017- it'll just not be invested in and the right path is to move to the Lightweight Outlook App. Is anyone else confused? So which is it? Outlook Client or the Outlook App with v9?  Has anyone had success with the newest outlook app w/in v9? How do we get rid of these errors and stick w/ the new outlook app?

Help!

News about this is published on the MS site: "We are reversing the deprecation of Dynamics 365 for Outlook".

So, the app is no longer deprecated.

the problem is in most of the regions still the V9 release is not yet available to upgrade. And we have no clear date when it will be available. that is why i suggested to go for client. At any time if you upgraded its very easy to enable it for all the users in one shot  using admin acc. To conclude its all depends on your timeline and how long you can wait.

Hope this help. If the suggestion answered your query pls mark it as verified to close the thread.

Thanks Syed: What do you think about this option?

We are wondering if the app can still be used even with the pop-up errors? We can perhaps train around this or even try and suppress/disable the pop-up from happening. If we go this route, it appears that the app is functioning ie: the action took place in CRM…contact or lead was created, email added to a record, event or task created, etc. The only issues seems to be with the error messages. This obviously isn’t ideal but might be a viable solution. We do not want to use the outlook client if at all possible.

Also, for what it’s worth, one of your sales reps at Microsoft sent me this article: community.dynamics.com/.../dynamics-365-version-9-0-is-here

    Which states: What's Being Deprecated

Finally, it's good to be aware of the things that are changing or going away. Previously, I covered some of these things, but let's revisit the highlights.

    • The "classic" Outlook add-in client is deprecated. The new Dynamics 365 App for Outlook is the replacement.

    • The Email Router is going away. By now, you should have converted to, or are considering to convert to Server Side Sync.

    • Dialogues are out. The replacement is the new Business Process Flows.

We manages to setup app for outlook for v9. (Still in preview relase) .But we are facing lot of issues including performance as well. My advise is to better to use the outlook client (existing features will remain working) till the next major release.By that time most of the issues might be fixed in the app.

    Hi KKO,

As per the MS documentation, the deprecated features will continue to work and are fully supported until they are officially removed in the future major release.

    docs.microsoft.com/.../important-changes-coming

So if it is required have the outlook integration now then I would suggest to for Outlook Client but if you can hold your client then it is worth waiting for the public release of Outlook App.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Ravi! your detail is most helpful. Do you recommend we install the client (dynamics 365 for outlook) w/ v9 and use this until the app is fully deployed with v9? Do you foresee any issues w/ the client running in v9? I'm assuming that MS will support the client until the app is ready?? Thanks again for your support.

    Hi KKO,

Yes, the old Outlook Client is deprecated in V9.

    Check this: docs.microsoft.com/.../important-changes-coming

It is recommended to use D365 App for Outlook but this app was not released with the release of V9.

    Check this: community.dynamics.com/.../253245

However, MS has just (i guess 19th Nov) released the preview feature of D365 App for Outlook recently. As this is a preview feature, it is yet fully functional and this may the reason you are seeing these issues. MS doesn't support preview features.

    Check this: docs.microsoft.com/.../deploy-dynamics-365-app-for-outlook

The best we can do here is to wait for the public release of MS to released the D365 App for Outlook. Keeping a tab on the above link would be good as previously it was saying the the app is not supported :)

    Hope this helps.
