Unable to tender a transaction recalled for return to a mercury gift card

We are getting an error when we try to process a return with a receipt.
Recalling the transaction for return, and then adding a gift card product for a mercury gift card and tendering the zero balance transaction returns an error: "Void Refno Not Found". It seems the system is sending a void request for the gift card instead of a purchase request. This only happens on returns from a receipt. Normal gift card purchasing and tendering works just fine. Gift cards added to a return without recalling a receipt also work fine.

The gift cards and tender types were installed according to the following instructions: www.mercurypay.com/.../RMS-MPSIntegrationInstallGuide.pdf

What can I do to help determine where and what the problem is and perhaps fix it?

I already have an open support ticket with Mercury, but they are unable to help me with the RMS end of it.

    You can eliminate the situation.  Just return the sale to Cash, then use that Cash to pay for the Gift Card.

    Thank you for the suggestion, I will run it by management and see if they will accept it as a workaround. It doesn't help me find the problem and solve it, however, and I cannot guarantee that all cashiers will follow this procedure.
