Is it possible to host a CRM report in a SSRS server not associated to CRM. This is for Dynamics CRM online.
I believe this is not possible and the correct way to do this is to use the data export service. Can anyone confirm this?

That's correct. The only way to directly report on data in CRM Online is via the Fetch connector, and that only works for reports hosted within CRM
