Microsoft Dynamics CRM (Archived)

Upgraded incorrectly

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I have just joined a business who have been using Dynamics for a number of years, but no-one really knows how to get the best out of it. I have worked with it before but it appears to me that their version is either hugely locked down or is simply missing key parts of the product.

When they first started using the tool, an ERP engineer "helped" them, but in doing so used customised forms, locked down views etc and this has and continues to obviously caused problems. I believe an upgrade was done from 2011 to 2015 last year but still functionality appears to be "missing". For example, there is nowhere for me as a system admin to be able to create a user and assign roles.

My questions are these:

1. Can these features etc be taken away from the product entirely and therefore I can't get them back?

2. If the above answer is no, then how do I get them back? Are the somehow somewhere locked down and I just need to find some superuser login to re-activate them?

3. If the upgrade was done incorrectly last year, can it be re-done properly?

Those are just a few of my questions. Once I know the answers to them, then hopefully I will be able to enter into discussion with a Dynamics CRM support provider locally to then help me. At the moment I've spoken to 2 of them and one says the functionality is gone and will need a re-build of the structure at a cost of thousand of dollars another has said that the functionality remains it just needs unlocking.

Appreciate any advice anyone can give.

    Hi Adrian,

The simple answer is no, these features cannot be taken away from the system, however, it is possible that the whoever designed this system, removed items from the Site Map that are not supposed to be there.

One easy way to test is to go to Advanced Find and see if you can find the User entity and query it (although they might have hidden it from being searchable).

Try see if you can add the Administration section back using a Site Map editor utility. You can get one by download XRMToolbox. For Administration, Add a new subarea based on a url, and enter "/tools/Admin/admin.aspx" in the url.

You can also try just to access the url directly:

    http(s)://yourorganddomain/tools/Admin/admin.aspx

Before thinking about redoing an upgrade, it would be smart to find out what the source of the issues is.

You can also create a clean environment, and do an migration using SSIS and KingswaySoft for example.

    Hope this helps.
