Domain and Active Directory setup

Our small company with a small 5 client accounting office is upgrading from GP  2010 software to GP 2015, a very basic accounting system (peer to peer), 7 small companies, no internet access for the accounting network.

            The Microsoft GP consultants that are doing the migration want me to sent up our new server with, I quote

 

“CRC is responsible for established domain and Active Directory and meet Management Reporter requirements”

 

This looks like it’s not that simple and I wonder if there is a basic setup for the 2012 server software and the 2014 SQL Express database. I’m not an IT person, all I do is install updates and patches.

    Cleon,

    One thing I would mention is that the link Tami provided shows calling the domain company.local. My understanding is that using .local as part of the domain is that it is no longer best practice. When setting up the domain you will save yourself some headaches if you use company.com, company.net, etc.

    Tami & Kirk, thanks for the quick reply. i was thinking that I could use one of the owners companies .com URLs; would this be work?

    Cleon,

    If the .com url is publicly addressable you want to use something like ad.company.com as the domain name. You could use company.com as the internal domain however this is going to make DNS harder to setup properly.

    Thanks for the pointer, our accounting network won't be on the internet, but I will stay away from using  our companies URL.
