WHY WOULD EDC ISSUE 3 DIGIT APPROVAL CODES VICE 6 DIGIT?

On credit card transaction sale is made and authorization code assigned to complete sale.  Upon verification by our business office and TYSYS, authorization code issued is 3 digit not standard 6 digit.  Have worked with TYSYS agent on this matter have reconfigured all registers several times problem persists.  Does not appear to be a problem with VAR Sheet info provided by TYSYS.   Settlement record capture detail shows settelment with 3 digit code.

    Hi Willie,

Do you have security set on the Approval Code box in the tendering window? It is likely that the 3 digit CVV code on the back of the credit card is being entered in the Approval Code box.

You may want to read through this blog post which goes into detail about how the Approval Code box works.

    Willie,

Keith points out the likely answer of your cashiers inputting an improper approval code.  In general this should be system generated, never entered by a cashier unless they are actually calling your CC Processor's 1800 line for a manual approval.  The only circumstance I know that may lead to this is if you are using a CC provider that does TSYS emulation (Mercury or Heartland come to mind) that may use 3 digit approval codes instead of 6.  I do not believe either Mercury or Heartland do this, but it was something that popped into my head.

Follow-up.  The problem was:  Sales Associate was entering the cvs number from back of card then pressing enter, rather than swipe card, press enter.  Retrained Sales Associate, problem solved.
