Living Social redemption

Quick question regarding how to accept gift cards or vouchers. We are looking at doing an agreement with Living Social. However in order to do this and abide by tax laws we need to have the ability to accept a gift card or voucher not as a tender type but have it reduce the price of the product by the amount of the GC or voucher. Ex. product X at $100 plus tax. scan voucher/GC $25 and now the product price= $75 plus tax on the new amount. Thanks

    Tim,

There are basically 3 ways we have come up with to solve this.

    1. Setup a tender and use it for 100% of the discount (this obviously does not address your situation).
    2. Create an item that is a negative dollar amount which is the price of the discount, make this item taxable.  The two issues with this are the cashier has to pay attention in case the living social coupon is more than the transaction, and that if the deal is you pay $15 and get a $30 coupon, then really the taxable amount should only be reduced by $15.  This results in you paying the tax on the other $15 instead of passing that on to the customer.
    3. The other solution is a combination of 1 and 2.  1/2 in tender 1/2 in negative taxable item.  This is not a perectly clean approach, but should be correct from a tax perspective.  We have cleaned it up a bit by creating a macro to do a lot of this, but still needs the cashier to be paying attention.

The ultimate solution would be to create a customization to handle this.  Not something that has been asked of us yet, but certainly something we can do.  If you are interested in learning what that would take, please drop me an email.
