Trying to import 1 million records through configuration packages - Rapid Start Services

Hi there,

I just want to upload the UK postcodes in the Post Code table in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016. I underestimated the situation and I tried to do it via configuration packages - Rapid Start Services but is working for three days now.

The server has the following specs:

1. Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

2. 12 GB memory

3. 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

The file has 1,048,576 records and this is the total number of the entire UK postcodes.

Should I wait or should I just kill it and create a data port?

Thanks

    Hi Christos,

my recommendation would be to kill it and create an XML port to read the file. But this is somewhat biased - I have never successfully used RapidStart in the last 5 years or so.

OTOH, postcodes don't sound too complex as a data structure ;) I would go for the XMLPort.

    with best regards

    Jens

three days running means the process crashed or ran into a deadlock. so kill it. you can use a xmlport to import the data or write a simple processingonly report for reading the textfile and creating the records in nav. the simple methods are mostly the best and do work and often very fast. the import should not last more than a couple of hours.

there are quite often threads regarding rapid start. not easy to use and a bit buggy.

there is additional a tool called "Universal Data Import Export - NAV 2013", which you could try:

    Hello Christos,

If you were using the function 'Import From Excel' from the "Config. Package Card" then you can safely kill the process because it is only loading the package records into the review screen. From there you still have to check for errors before you Apply the import into the database. Or were you already trying to Apply the imported records? If so, then if you kill the process some of the records may have already been imported.

A simple import like this would be done in about 30 seconds if you were to script this using T-SQL. I've used Rapid start for several operations and it is the application layer that is slow, the database can handle this no problem. If you have an expert DBA in-house then you can script this into NAV very fast with SQL, or if you don't have the expertise then go the XML port route.

so everyone seems to be saying that the Rapidstart doesn't work.

shouldn't Microsoft be working on making it work? Importing Postal Codes seems to me to be a pretty common need, around the world.

    Chris,

    Try to download this tool

    blog.dynms.com/.../the-nav-2013-universal-xmlport.html

This used to work me much better than rapid start and it is very fast.

Hi Suresh, thanks for the answer. I have tried it just right now and i get an error "The file you are trying to use is too large".
