The workflow work item assign to manager/superior, if there is not manager/superior for an employee, the system will cause error. How to avoid this error. And the Condition decision is not enough to avoid this situation.

If there is no one in the hierarchy to approve the leave request, what would you expect to happen?

Not sure if this will help your specific situation, but we have quite a few people who don't have a manager due to our flat organizational hierarchy. These people are directors and above who run their departments and we determined that we wouldn't require any approval for PTO for them (as they are in a trusted position, and there is no one above them in the hierarchy for an approval to flow to anyway.)

However, we still wanted their direct reports to enter PTO and have it approved. In this case, we created a second Leave Type of "Department Head" PTO and assigned these directors to it. From there, in the workflow we added an Automatic Action of "Where Leave and absence request.Leave type contains value Department Head then Auto Approve.

If you're just missing a manager here and there in the hierarchy, obviously this solution won't work. But if you're in a similar company configuration, it might be useful.

    Hope this helps,

    Austen
