Management Reporter 2012 CU13 "Period Does Not Exist" Error for Consolidated Statements

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello:

We are using Management Reporter 2012 CU13 (MR), and we have several foreign entities represented by GP companies.  To that end, we have created several consolidated balance sheets and income statements using trees containing all companies--both foreign and domestic.

Two of our foreign entities are new and, therefore, have no fiscal years prior to 2016.

I noticed in MR that, if I tried to generate one of our consolidated statements as of the end of the previous fiscal year, it caused the entire report to not generate.  The error that appeared in the Report Queue Status window stated something along the lines of "period does not exist for company".

I could understand if MR were to prevent generating of data for the two new companies that have no data from the prior fiscal year.  But, I'm surprised that the entire report was prevented from generating data for any entity.

My concern about this regards what happens if we create new GP companies in the future.  If we have to generate a consolidated statement for a period prior to the first fiscal period of the new company, are we not going to be able to generate consolidated statements?

If so, is there a checkbox or some sort of mechanism within MR that would allow for the report to generate simply by ignoring branches of the tree representing new companies?

Thanks!  Much appreciated!

John

Hi John, are you using the legacy or the data mart?

I've had that error before but with the data mart it's always just a warning not an error.  But with the legacy we have the problem of 'every entity in the tree must have at least ONE period open to work' which isn't that great when we have multiple entities that have been sold but need to remain on the consolidated report for a few years (current v prior year reporting)

    John,

This might well be a bug in MR... that's a scenario I've never tested.. However, as Steve Erbach suggested in the GPUG forum, I'd use  a copy of your reporting tree and remove the companies that don't have a valid FY calendar setup for the periods you want to run he report against. In your case, I'm not sure either CU14 would fix the problem.

    Hi Beat:

    That's a good point!

There is one thing that I should have mentioned that's very important.  We use MR's scheduling feature to publish reports to the Report Library in Report Viewer.

This does not give you the option of selecting units of the tree.  The reports simply don't generated.

That's why I was wondering if there is some sort of setting in MR that would "bypass" units of tree for those companies that did not exist during certain fiscal periods.

    Hi John,

As far as I remember, when you generate a consolidated company report, you have to select the entities in the tree... So if you now that some companies don't have valid fiscal periods for the selected time frame, don't include them... I'd strongly suggest to upgrade to CU14, as this release CU13 had many bugs.
