Changing GL Account Numbers

In BC currently, you can change a GL account number one-by-one and it will maintain it's integrity and such. In pushing the change via edit in Excel or a configuration package, you lose that. 
 
Does anyone have any experience with mass changing GL account numbers and having it successfully maintain data integrity?
