Hi
CRM does not have built in SMTP/POP/IMAP or other mail server features to send and receive emails. CRM needs to use Exchange or other mail servers to send/receive emails.
On old versions of CRM, We used a tool call Email Router that acted as a bridge between CRM and Exchange/Mail server to send and receive emails. This email router is not recommended anymore and the new approach is Server Side Sync - meaning CRM can directly connect to exchange and send receive emails and it does not need the intermediate tool like Email Router.
Both the email router and Server Side Sync does not run on user's machine, it runs on CRM server. Both of them are server side methods
We have another option to send/receive email, using Outlook. Outlook is an email client that runs on user's machine. We can configure the CRM to say do not use Email Router or Server Side Sync to send and receive email, we could set it to use Outlook. If we configure this way, CRM will be using the user's outlook to send and receive email. This is essentially a client side email sync you could say

docs.microsoft.com/.../server-side-synchronization
Server side means there are things in back end.
Client Side means there are things at UI.
