Clarification on using D365 BC Essential and Premium license

I would like to seek clarification on the following matter regarding D365 BC licensing.

Is it possible to use both Dynamics 365 Business Central Essential and Premium licenses within the same tenant, but under different companies.

Is there any limitations or consideration?

I have the same question (0)

    Hi there 👋

    Thanks for your question!

In Dynamics 365 Business Central, it is not possible to mix Essential and Premium licenses within the same tenant. Microsoft requires that all users within a tenant be licensed under either Essential or Premium, but not both.

     Key considerations:

    • The license type applies at the tenant level, not per company.
    • If you choose Premium, all users must be licensed accordingly—even if some only need Essential-level functionality.
    • You can’t assign Premium to one company and Essential to another within the same tenant.

💡 If you need different functionality levels across companies, you may need to evaluate:

    • Whether all users truly require Premium features.
    • Consolidating companies under one license type.
    • Creating a separate tenant (though this adds complexity and cost).

    Hope this helps!

No, it's not possible, you cannot mix Essential and Premium users within the same Business Central environment.

But there can be few cases where you can mix but with few conditions.

This question was recently asked and answered here:
Can same BC SaaS tenant have Premium and Essential License

To save you time, the answer is Yes, as long as the Essentials Users aren't trying to access a "Premium" User Experience company.

Hi, The answer is yes. Perhaps AI is still stuck in previous data.

PS: This was a two-stage adjustment.
Dynamics 365 Business Central: Different licenses for different production environments (Essentials and Premium in separate environments, on the same tenant)

    Thanks.

In Business Central, you can mix Essential and Premium licenses in the same tenant. The license is assigned per user, not per company, so some users can be Essentials and others Premium. The limitation is that Premium users unlock features (like Manufacturing/Service), but Essentials users in the same environment won’t have access to those features.
