Power Bi Self-Service Templates Security

Hi guys,

This one might turn out to be out of scope for the D365 community, but I figured there's no harm in asking.

My company wants to start providing our customers with self-service Power BI templates to be added to their D365 environments as dashboards.

We want to avoid having users share those templates among themselves, as that would mean that 1 person per company would buy it, and then provide it to everyone else.

The question is though, is there a way we can make sure the user we gave the template to doesn't share it with others?

Cheers!

    Hi partner,

Could you tell me how the buyer provide the template to everyone else?

If the buyer share it, he/she can assign the share permission.

    Hi Lu Hao,

We haven't set our minds on the method yet.

Could you please elaborate on your suggestion, so that I can try it out and possibly suggest it to the team?

    Cheers!

    Hi partner,

If self-service Power BI templates appear in D365 as a dashboard, then we can do this.

    1. System dashboard

For system dashboards, we can enable security roles for it to set which security roles have access to it.

    Please refer to https://www.powerobjects.com/blog/2016/08/30/using-security-roles-to-disable-custom-and-system-dashboards/

In addition, system dashboards cannot be shared because every user who matches the security roles can access it directly.

    2. Personal dashboard

For personal dashboards, we can share them with other users or teams. In the sharing window, we can set their permissions for this dashboard.

For example, I share this dashboard for three users who have permission to read it. In addition, for sharing permissions, I only gave it to the first two users, then the third user can only read this dashboard and can not share it.

If you want to change users with dashboard permissions in the future, you only need to click the Share button on this dashboard again to add or remove users in the sharing window.
