SQL Server Error in Workflow

Hello -

We are having issues with our workflows.  A bunch of the workflows we have setup in Dynamics CRM 4.0 are sitting in a Waiting Status with the following error:

"A SQL Server error occurred.  Try this action again.  If the problem continues, check the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Community for solutions or contact your organization's Microsoft Dynamics CRM Administrator.  Finally, you can contact Microsoft Support."

I have search different solutions to this issue and it does not seem like anything is helping.

Please let me know if anyone can offer any support or if more information is needed.

Thanks!

    Hi Jesse,

Is this issue still occurring for you? The error message you are referencing can be caused by a number of issues. I would recommend taking a look at the logic of the workflow and see if it can be streamlined first. If it is not the logic of the workflow, then the issue more than likely resides with SQL performance. My best recommendation for you would to be to take a look at the CRM Performance Papers as they contain a good deal of SQL Performance tips.

    (CRM 2011) www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

If in the end the issue is still occurring, I would recommend that you reach out to a Microsoft Partner for guidance. If you are a Microsoft Partner, I would then recommend that you open a support request or pursue a professional service request through us.

    Thanks,

A typically helpful CRM error message!

it might be an idea to fire up SQL Server Profiler, with the tuning settings.  It will give you more information, rather than a precise answer.  It may at least give you an idea of which part of the workflow is causing the problem.

I guess the alternative would be to insert the odd "stop workflow" statement to try and locate the problem statement, and then follow the tuning guidelines.
