Difference between "solutions" and "plugins" in Dynamics 365 online

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

When I go to my Dynamics 365 online-site ->Administration-> Customization I can import "solutions"

But when I read about extending dynamics on server side (link below) I can only read about "plugins".

Are they the same thing?

Hi Rob! I know a plugin that can help log calls automatically in MS Dynamics. That app is Tenfold, a CTI and sales acceleration platform that offers features like call logging and call monitoring. You can check out Tenfold if you'd like to know more. www.tenfold.com/.../dynamics

Ok... I didnt really get what a solution is, but its clear to me that I meant to create a plugin, from your description.

(Im going to update other systems when a user make changes in dynamics 365).

(PS. Trying to set your answer as the correct on, but link does not work for me...)

    Thanks!

They are totally different, solutions is a method to let you group and manage your custom components for a particular set of functionality or release but remember solutions are optional.

A plug-in is custom business logic ( C# or VB.net code) that you can integrate with Microsoft Dynamics CRM (online & on-premises) to modify or augment the standard behavior of the platform. Another way to think about plug-ins is that they are handlers for events fired by Microsoft Dynamics CRM. You can subscribe, or register, a plug-in to a known set of events to have your code run when the event occurs.

You can add plugins into a solution :)
