Dynamics 365 instance backup

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

Can you tell me if there are any limitations to the back up of Dynamics 365? We have customized forms and written custom code in Dynamics. We do not want to lose anything and what I found is that we can create manual backups in Dynamics but it is only saved for 3 days, so backups are removed after 3 days.

So far I've found the following info:

And what  solutions or tools can you suggest me for a Online back up of a database and instances.

Thanks in advance.

    Hey Sam,

The backup you see in the Admin portal of D365 takes a backup of your customization + data.

Remember that you cannot restore a production backup into a production tenant.

You can only restore from Production tenants to Sandbox tenants.

In case you need to do a Production restore, and you don't have multiple Sandbox licenses, this might be an issue.

Secondly, if you are just worried about your customization (form changes + javascript or any custom code), you need to look at solution management than restoring the databases.

This is the microsoft way of doing it: msdn.microsoft.com/.../jj602974.aspx

This is a great article (though a bit complex): salimadamoncrm.com/.../selecting-your-dynamics-crm-developers-setup

The challenge is in storing the metadata customization, since these are all XML.

I believe Sparkle CRM (by Scott Durow) has some solution management capabilities.

If not, use the CRM Developer Extensions, which might have these.

    Hi Sam,

Yeah I would also recommend to go with Azure for permanent CRM instance backups

If found useful, please mark the answer as verified.
