To give you an example:
You may have operations you do may always use the same tools (Fork lift), personnel (Dave), description (Reach) and quality measures ( ). so you bundle these into a standard task with a description you can understand that summarises the task like Reach F/L
Then when you are creating a routing there is a standard task code option where you can assign all of these attributes to the operation in one go by picking the standard task rather than the description coming from the work centre and you having to define the tools, personnel, description and quality measures against the routing.
It is very similar to the standard purchase and sales lines saving a bit of time on data input
