Discount Macro: Can you turn it off mid-sale?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We have several macros for discounts at our liquor store (e.g. 10% Senior) They work very well. Here's the complaint from my cashiers. They ring up 12 bottles of wine, and then use the "Case Discount" macro. This turns on the 10% discount for all 12 bottles of wine. Then the customer adds a six-pack to the sale at it gets the 10% discount - which is wrong. I know they can go back and apply the case discount line-by-line, but they would like to just "turn off" the discount (after it applies to 12 wine bottles) and ring the six pack at full price.

Another way of asking this question is "With discounts is it either: every item in the sale or line-by-line?" Sure would be nice to discount a group of items and then ring the last few items at full price.

    Brian,

Voila! "discount all items will, if fact, allow me to "turn off" the discount after discounting a series of items on the screen. Thank you for your answer.

I have been using RMS for 10 years; never paid attention to "discount all items" because it was greyed out when inspecting the discount screen. When I re-record my macros, I will scan one item before I begin so this option is not greyed out.

    Steve,

Based on what you are describing, it sounds like a "Transaction" discount is being applied.

If you "discount all items" I believe you are only affecting the items on the screen at that time.

Brian, perhaps I have recorded my macro wrong. But once I use "my 10% discount macro," (discount all items) the discount stays "on" and all additional items continue to be discounted. Are you suggesting that, by using the discount window (without recording a macro), that this behavior is different?

    Thank you,

    Steve

Thanks Ed. I have considered using mix and match. In fact, I use this when customers "build their own" six-pack of beer. I have not implemented m&m for wine because 1) we have more than 1000 wines, and 2)not all wines qualify for the case discount.

At this point the "headache" of discounting line-by-line is less than implementing mix and match. I may have to reconsider though.

What if you ring up the items you want to discount, then choose the option under the discount screen "perform discount on all items", then ring up the last item.

You could use a Mix and Match: Percent Off discount scheme.  Apply that scheme to each wine bottle item under the Item Properties -> Discounts tab.

Then the cashier would scan the wine as always,  but not have to hit a button for a discount, and it would only apply to items that you choose, which means no beer.

    System Solutions,

Thank you for your reply. I cannot tell by your answer if this will solve my problem. I want to discount 12 bottles (without discounting each line) and then add an item at full price. Will you Customer Rewards Solution enable this?

    Thanks,

    Steve
