Periodic Journals

Posted on by 96
Hello,
I am trying to understand how Periodic journals work
1. I created Periodic journals for Unit = Days on 10/09/2024
2. I then created a General Journal and retrieved my periodic journal on 10/10/2024 but forgot to post it

I would like to create another Periodic journal for todays date 10/11/2024 and post it however when I retrieve my periodic journal in a new general journal no line is being generated

Thank you for your detailed response and we post these entries daily hence wanted to see if Periodic journals will work for the Finance team

We are also using an excel template to post General Journals for some of our entries and that has been working for us

I will look into Voucher templates

    Thank you once again

It looks about how I expected, and it's not possible for a specific date unfortunately.
This is the best free documentation I can find: Post periodic journals - Finance | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

Both of the journal lines have been configured with a unit of 'Days,' and a number of units equal to 1. That means that the periodic journal has been configured to copy those two lines each day.

In the dialog, we are asking Dynamics to copy lines from the periodic journal until 10/14/2024. Since the date on the lines is 10/12/2024, it will create lines on that date, continuing until the to-date (10/14/2024).

The 'From date for lines without a date' can be a bit confusing. It is only used as a stand-in for lines in the periodic journal that do not have a date.

I do wonder, if it's a common template you will post manually from time to time, if it made sense to use voucher templates instead?
In this example, I have taken a journal used for payroll, and made to a template that I have recalled into a new GL journal.

Thank you Jonas for the quick response

    I have another question please
Below is my Periodic Journal which was last copied on 10/11/2024 and the recurrence Unit is 'Days'

Today I copied my Periodic journal again and selected To date of 10/14/2024

As you can see the same Journal Lines have been included more than once

Is there a way to just copy this once for the current date instead of creating these multiple journal lines

    Thank you

That’s about what I’d expect it to do. The date is in the future, which is why it won’t copy the lines again to a new journal.
You’d have to change the dates in your periodic journal back to if you want to retrieve it again.

The "Last Date" is just to inform the user of when it was last copied to a journal.
