Tenant to Tenant migration for Tier 1 environments

Hello Community,

We will be migrating all our projects / environments in LCS which are tier 1 environments from one tenant to another tenant.

I was looking at the documentation from Microsoft, and it mentions that it only supports Production and Sandbox.

I am not sure how to migrate tier 1 environments.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ankit

Tenant to Tenant migration for Tier 1 environments
    Hi Guys,

Indeed for tier-1 this is not supported .. but when trying to restore a database from the previous environments to a new one (different tenants) you will run into some issues.

To start with you will have to change the admin configuration in USERINFO table before you can access the new environment.
Also you have to remove (or change) all users as the SID will be different for them in another tenant.
ISV Licenses also have to be reinstalled for the new tenant and there are a few tables where you have to update the tenant ID.
And in D365 itself you probably have to make some changes and add some new records for App Registrations used in the new Tenant.

I cannot find any documentation about the exact steps needed but at least the ones mentioned above are needed.

I kind a hope there are more people with some experience on this process .. If so, please feel free to share this with us :)

    Kind regards, Jurgen

Tenant to Tenant migration for Tier 1 environments
    Hi Ankit,

As mentioned by Zain, Tier-1 environments on LCS can't be moved to another tenant. These are VMs running in your own Azure Subscription. Microsoft can't access those details. For that reason as mentioned below, you can deallocate the environments from tenant 1 and create new VMs on tenant 2.
Before deleting an environment, ensure developers have checked in completed work or shelved pending work. You can also create a backup of the database to be used in the new VM.

In case you have local VHDs (OneBox), you can rerun the steps you need to perform before first time use of the VM. Also here, you can probably better create new VMs to have clean setup.

    Hi Ankit,

I don’t think tenant-to-tenant migration is supported for Tier 1 environments. Like you mentioned, the official process is mainly for Production and Sandbox environments.

For Tier 1 (developer) VMs, we usually just deallocate or delete the old VM and set up a new one under the new tenant — then restore any needed data or configurations manually.

Let us know if you're using Microsoft-hosted or self-hosted Tier 1s — that affects how the restore is handled.

    Regards,

    Zain
