pos 2009 system times out in the back office. Any idea what is going on?

Do you get past the login screen? or does it timeout after you try to login but before the pos/manager view opens?
Have you been able to open the backoffice previously without a timeout? no- the settings to connect to the database is incorrect -> use the change connection option from the login screen to correct this.
If you can get into the PSO/Manager view what functions/operations are you performing when it times out? Also is your backoffice comptuer going to sleep, if it does then that is the cause.
Is the database comptuer going to sleep? that could also cause the timeout
If non these options fixes the problem please reply if more information.
Thank you for your response. I can get pass the login screen to POS/Manager for about 60 seconds then I get the following message: "Microsoft Dynamics POS 2009 has encountered a problem and needs to close." I send the report as requested. The error signature is as Follows: Event type: clr20r3, P1: Pos.exe 3.0.0.0, P3: 4ad21978, P4: mscorlib, P5: 2.0.0.0, P6: 5040540e, P7: c42, P8: 59, P9: system.formatexception.
I have had the system since 2009, never encountered this problem until about 4 mos. ago. With my limited technical knowledge of the POS system, nothing I've tried fixed the problem. It does not matter what function I'm trying to access, it times out. The backoffice computer nor the database computer go to sleep.
