Upgrade Business Central to Wave 2

Hi,

Do we need to give Global admin for someone to be able to upgrade our Business Central to wave 2? We are currently on the Business Central cloud version.

We are thinking to engage an external consultant to help us to upgrade to wave 2. However, for security purposes, we don't want to provide global admin access to our office365 to the consultant.

Is there an alternative way to be able to give the consultant access without giving global admin to upgrade our Business Central?

Or the upgrade can be done easily through our IT provider?

Kind regards,

Sandra Teh

    Hi,

The upgrade of the BC needs to be manually initiated via the admin center.

    businesscentral.dynamics.com/<tenant id>/admin

Just set the scheduled window and request the update.  It will then happen automagically during the time window you specify.   If it fails then its probably related to some custom extension.  Your going to then have to investigate and install those extensions on a version 15 (Wave 2) sandbox (you can create a sandbox from the current production system).

Generally if you have a Partner which manages you BC they can also perform the upgrade (basically they just press  upgrade button).  Just ask them to do it.

As I know it you need to be global admin to perform the task.  But you don't need to provide a consultant the role to set the schedule windows and request the update, just do that yourself.

On SaaS, upgrades are managed by Microsoft, not by you. It's Microsoft that automatically (when scheduled) upgrades your tenant. An external consultant can be configured as a delegated admin of a tenant if you need to give him access to customize or administer the environment.
