I have CRM 2013 Service Pack 1 installed, now updating associated SQL Server to 2014 SP3. are they compatible?

They are not officially compatible - see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3005167/compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2013 which only suggests compatibility up to SQL 2014 SP2. In practise, if CRM is already installed, you should be able to apply update SQL to SQL 2014 SP3, as compatibility issues normally only arise on install/upgrade of CRM, but this would be unsupported
