Dynamics CRM Outlook configuration wizard problems

Hi all,

I am running Dynamics 4.0 across MSSQL and access it through an IP address in my web browser. When running the configuration wizard for Outlook and selecting to configure for 'my company' then entering the IP address in the intranet address bar, i get and error:

"Unable to connect to remote server"
Then
"The configuration wizard cannot connect to the Microsoft CRM server.
This might indicate that the server is down"

I have tried various solutions including:
serveral variations of the address such as specifiying port 80, or 555, or adding /*MYCOMANY etc
adding the address to the trusted sites in me IE options
selecting the through an ISP option instead of company

but to no avail! Also the diagnostics tool is useless because it requires the system to have already been configured!
Has anyone over come the same problem? how?!
apologies if this issue has already been posted and addressed, but a lack of search function and over 1700 items makes it hard to find

any help would be greatly appreciated,
Doug Roberts

You mention '555'. The default port is '5555' so this is worth a try i.e. http://<servername>:5555

    No worries, happy to help.

The only thing I can think of is try the address in IE. It should be able to connect. If it can't it might give a better indication of the issue.

sorry i'm not entirely sure what you mean by address here, are you referring to the IP? i.e. 123.45.67.890? thats what i usually use to connect to CRM and it works fine
or did you mean with a port number attached on the end or something else?

Yes, the URL you are typing in to IE which should look something like http://<servername>:<portnumber>

It could be that you're using a different port which may be the problem.

ah well, the CRM runs on a virtual machine which i have remote access to so usually i just type the IP in:
http://<eg 123.45.67.890>  and after a password prompt it automatically redirects me to http://<IP>/<CompanyName>/loading.aspx
so really i dont know what port is being used, how can i find this out?

thanks for the continuing support Leon!

ok, I just looked and it works if i just type the server name into IE address bar and nothing else:
http://<servername>           it doesn't require me to enter any port numbers, is there a wa to find them?

If you go to IIS Manager, browse the web sites to find the right one and then right click on it and go to properties, the default web site tab will show the port number.

Here's a different issue that I am having with the Outlook configuration wizard.  I am running Dynamics 4.0 and have used the configuration wizard for the Outlook client on half a dozen computers so far without issue, but came up with a new window on the one I installed today.

When running the configuration wizard for Outlook and selecting to configure for 'my company' then entering the IP address in the intranet address bar, the next window I usually see is the 'customer experience' participation prompt.  But on the machine today, after I entered the IP address and clicked Next, I was prompted to select "My Organization", but the selection box was empty. We only have one organization, so I don't know where this is coming from.  Clicking "Next" to get past this window does nothing.  Clicking "Back" takes me to the prior windows where I confirmed that I entered the same info as always.  I had to cancel out of the configuration as it would go no further than that organization selection window.

Has anyone seen this before?  Is there a fix?

    Thank you.

Never mnid.  I found the answer.

The user had not been set up in CRM.
