Problem with Item Dimension Combination

Hi All,

I am trying to work with Item Dimensions in Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0. I have created one item "Jeans" in the Item Master of the Inventory Management module. I have created size dimensions like XL, L, M, S and also created color dimesions Black and Blue. I have set up the item dimension combinations for "Jeans" and I have various combinations like

Jeans XL Blue - Cost Price 10$

Jeans XL Black - Cost Price 15$

Jeans L Black and so on

For each of these combinations I have associated a Cost Price. I wanted to use this cost price, i.e the price that is being set for each item dimension combination while creating orders (Purchase Orders / Sales Orders) for calculating the cost. For this I tried checking the "Use combination cost price" check box on the General Tab of Items Tab. However AX is not picking up the cost price defined per dimension combination to calculate the costs in Sales Orders as well as Purchase Orders?

Can someone please let me know if my understanding about the concept of Item Dimensions correct? Or am i missing something ?

Thanks,

Vandana

    Hello Vandana,

How exacly do you check if DAX picks the correct cost price for SO and PO? Which field on a form/tablle or which report?

I'm not a specialist in item costing but ultimately the cost depends on the chosen Inventory model (FIFO/LIFO/Weighted average/Standard, etc.) in the Inventory model group. I guess DAX may assign your "combination cost price" to actual inventory and transactions only if you choose the Standard cost option.

For example, I created a new item (it uses FIFO method) and specified the cost price for two combinations (say amount A and B). I entered a new quote and run the Price simulation functionality - it was picking the cost from my combination cost price. But there were no previous item transactions.

Then I purchased some items and DAX calculated the cost - say amount C. Now when I try to run price simulation in quotes, DAX uses the calculated cost (amount C) and not the specified combination cost price (amount A).

But it still picks the specified combination cost price in the Return cost field for new sales orders.

I will try to investigate further tomorrow.

    George

Re: Problem with Item Dimension Combination

    Hello George,

I am able to see the combination cost price in the Return cost field for new Sales orders. Thanks for suggesting this. But I am unable to understand the significance of having combination cost price. How will it help in inventory management or Item costing? Your help on this will be highly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Vandana

Re: Problem with Item Dimension Combination

    See this scenario

Select standard cost price for ur items inventory model group. Put some cost for example 100 in combination price fields and in price field underneath that put 2. Now if u purchase same item with same combination at unit price of 60 u will standard cost loss of 10. Look u have the option of mentioning cost of an item at the price tab of item but nowhere u have option to put cost as per variant of item. To put cost as per variant u use this (combination price) and for Purchase price or Sale price as per  ur variants u will be using trade agreements.
