hi, we just upgraded to gp 2015 and installed sqlexpress 2012 on a new server. was able to make a odbc connection with native client 11 on my dell vostros laptop and also a new dell optiplex 3020, both with windows 7 pro.  just purchased a another optiplex 3020 with windows 7 and cannot make the odbc connection. when testing the connection it take a about a minute afterwhich the test fails. i rechecked all settings and they are the same as on computers where the connection is fine.  this is the error. any help will be much appreciated.

RE: odbc connection problem with native client 11

i finally did make a connection with odbc but not exactly sure what i did to get the connection as i changed a few things at the same time after reading other options after googling the problem.  a few of those included:

i installed sqlexpress 2012 on the failing computer to see if i could make a connection through studio management; this was successful so i.....t seemed clear that we could connect to the server

turning off the firewall on the server itself

creating a rule for incoming events for port 1433 and for sqlexpress.exe

then i tried to create the odbc connection and it was successful.

i turned back on the firewalls on the server and the connection still seemed to work fine.

but a turn of events.....tried to run gp 2015 utilities and it gets hung up on the log in with an error that the server is not responding.....jeepers....

    thanks all for the input

RE: odbc connection problem with native client 11

    thanks...

when i ping -a myserver name it replys 192.168.1.15

did netstat -a, then netstat -n, then netstat -o   all seemed fine, seems to make connections

with netstat -n  there were 5 addresses replied..the local was 192.168.1.5 and then 5 different foreign addresses  one of which was the server 192.168.1.15

nothing with telnet as our computer doesn't recognize the command

to summarize what we are doing....we are using gp 2015 with sql  2012.    when setting up the odbc  with sql native client 11;    servername\sqlexpress

using sql authentication  with sa and password (which was used setting up the dynamics information in sql)

    Can you try this:

Check that you have connectivity to the SQL Server. Note what you are using to connect: machine name, domain name or IP address? Use this when checking connectivity. For example if you are using myserver

    • Start > Run > cmd

    •netstat -ano| findstr 1433

    •telnet myserver 1433

    •ping -a myserver

Check what ports and IP addresses are being returned.

    Alternative:

If you still can’t get any connection, you may want to create a SQL account on the server, a corresponding SQL user on the database in question, and just use this username/password combo in your web application.

thank you, yes we are using the sql authentication with sa and the password.  it is really stumping me. i have done a lot of reading and still no luck. i even reinstalled windows thinking it was a corrupted driver.   would it be advisable to open up a case with microsoft?   i didn't think it would be in the realm of their support for dynamics.

    thanks again for helping

Are you using Windows or SQL authentication? Try using sa credentials.

RE: odbc connection problem with native client 11

thank you. i did try the 32  bit odbc but the same problem.  i can ping from the command prompt by server name and the ip address.

i did disable firewalls; i have norton running but i also tried it without nortons or windows firewall turned on.

i have double checked everything with computers that can connect to dynamics

thanks for the suggestion on pinging as it seems to verify that i can connect to the server.

any other ideas?  thanks for your help

RE: odbc connection problem with native client 11

With Microsoft Dynamics GP you have to use the 32-bit ODBC connection - second make sure you can PING by name and PING by IP address to the SQL Server.  Sometimes seeing the folders is not enough.

Make sure the name of the ODBC connection on the new machine is the exact same as on the currently functional machines.

Lastly 'as a test' disable the firewall on the new laptop.

Hope something here helps.  If so, post your results as I am sure others will be interested to know what finally worked for you.

RE: odbc connection problem with native client 11

I can see all the shared folders on the network and can access all the other computers on the network so there is network connectivity. which is why i'm stumped. i even tried connecting using the 32 bit odbc but it fails also.  but for some reason i can't connect to the servername\sqlexpress.

This looks more like a network connectivity issue. Make sure you can "see" the server from the PC failing to connect.
