Workflow to create Note when field is updated

I created a workflow to create a Note on the opportunity when the "Next Steps" field is updated on the opportunity. This works correctly but how do I set the Created By on the Note to the user who updated the Next Steps field? Currently it is showing my name because I created the workflow.

    Hi,

I'm pretty sure if you convert it to a real-time workflow, you'll have an option to run it under the "current" user.. which is exactly what you need for the "createby"

    Here is the option:

Thanks! But now my issue is that it's creating duplicate (sometimes 2 or 3) notes because for some reason the field is updating multiple times. I don't know why this is, I'm only hitting Save once on the form, yet it's showing multiple times in the Audit History. Can you help?

There could be any number of reasons - I don't know where/how the field is updated (are there scripts/workflows/plugins/business rules involved?)

You might try a workaround (it won't work if you need your workflow to respond to the server-side changes as well, though):

    - Create another datetime field

    - On the opportunity form, add javascript on-change handler to you existing "next steps" field

    - In that handler, set your new data time field to the current date. I believe it will only be called if there is a "real" change in the field value

    - Configure your workflow to start on the update of that new field rather than on the update of the "next steps" field

Or you could create a plugin and user pre-image/post-image to see if there was an actual update..
