Item type can be changed only to discontinued

Hi,

Item type was mistakenly defined as 'Sales inventory'  for some items and used with number of SOP transactions

Is there a way to change the item type into 'Service'? the UI does not allow and it popup with the following error:

Item type can be changed only to discontinued

what will be the impact if I change that from the backend (IV00101)

thank you,

 .

    Hello Alaa

Although this is not a widely recommended solution, although I have always updated the item record on the item master table in several cases. The difference between a service and sales inventory item type is the fact that one is tracked on the inventory level (cost layers are created after every single transaction), while the other is not tracked on the inventory level.

So in order to do so, follow the steps below to ensure that you apply your changes properly:

    • Post all pending transactions associated with this item, from the associated modules (distribution modules in general)
    • Adjust out all the remaining balance of this item, to get down to zero
    • update the item type field on the IV00101 table
    • run a reconciliation and check links (mostly won't add any value, but a prerequisite for such changes)

As a quality check, create a transaction for this item (adjustment, transfer, sales, ... or whatever), and check that no inventory records are thrown for this item.

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

As a reference for your update statement, the field to be updated is (ITEMTYPE), associated values  are:

    ( 1 )  Sales Inventory

    ( 5 )  Service Item

Better first you can try this on Test Server. For your reference, please have a look on the below link.

    Hope this helps!!!

    Soma

The link leads to a totally different issue.

It is related to switching from a service item to a sales inventory item, which is the opposite of the inquiry.

    Mohamoud,

I hope some of the suggestions from the link will helps to change the item type from sales inventory to service. Because, we need to analyze the both way of tracking while we change the item types(Sorry if I am wrong).

    Thank you so much Mahmoud,

I believe you are referring to IV00102 -> QTYONHND for adjusting the balance, Is that correct?

If yes that table always contains 2 records for each item (with RCRDTYPE 1 and 2)

Are both records to be updated?

    Greatly appreciated!

Sounds dead on to me :)

No, do not update IV00102, just pull out all the quantities through the inventory adjustment window, that is the correct way.

    Keep us posted,

update the item type field on the IV00101 table

can you please explain this step by step ?

    Hi,

I would first follow Mahmoud's advice and clear out any existing inventory. In that inventory transaction pay attention to the GL accounts, you need to make sure you are not carrying any asset value in inventory in your GL. Then, you should be able to change the value in the IV00101 ITEMTYPE field from 1 to 5.

Mahmoud's first response contains the steps to follow to change an item type from 1 to 5. You have to do the extra stuff because the type 1 item keeps track of costs and quantities and you need to clear all of those balances.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
