Easy FRx Installation question

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 420

We're deploying a new SQL Server 2008 64-bit, so I'm assuming we can't install FRx server on that, since it's 64-bit.  Can we install the FRx server portion on another box, like a Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 that's NOT 64-bit?  Or does it have to be a server operating system?

Next question, based on that answer:  if we CAN install it on a desktop OS, can the FRx server software point to a SQL datbase on the new SQL Server 2008 64-bit machine?  Or for that matter, even if we install it on an old 32-bit server, does that particular machine have to have SQL on it, or can it point to the new SQL Server?

FRx 6.7 with SP11 is compatible with 64 bit OS.

    Brain,

Richard is incorrect.  FRx 6.7 is not and will never be supported as a 64 bit product.

What server portion are you installing?  Neither FRx Report Server or FRx Web Port will work correctly on a 64 bit machine.

If you mean the shared file component of FRx, called the Sysdata directory, this is usually a shared folder on a server.  Since it is just a set of shared files and Access databases, it can reside anywhere, even a 64 bit server.

And finally, FRx can definitely connect to databases residing on 64 bit SQL Servers.

If this did not fully answer your questions or you have any others about FRx, Forecaster, Management Reporter or PerformancePoint Server just shoot me an email at Rob.Iversen@MSXGroup.com.

    Thanks

    Rob

I stand corrected. What I meant to say was that the FRx Sysdata folder could exist on a 64 bit server.

I have a slightly different question.  I'm moving GP to a new, 64-bit server but I want to leave FRx on the existing server (while I get up to speed on Mgmt Reporter) and simply 'point' it to the new GP server.  Is this as easy as modifying the data source in each of the companies I have setup in FRx or is the more to it?

    Thanks,

    Bryce

Is this case you are not moving the program(FRx) only the GP data. I have not had any problem doing this. I assume you have multiple computers running FRx and they all point to the GP data server?

Well I have multiple clients all running GP/FRx apps and pointing to the new server.  I have the one, old FRx server (also pointing to the new GP server) and it seems to working.  I just can't figure out how the clients 'know' to look at the new server.

    Thanks for your help!

Then updating the DSN should be all you need to do. I have seen it where GP requires you to load the SQL Native Client for 2008. I am not sure if FRx requires it.

Right you are.  Thanks so much for the confirmation!
