Serial numbers assigned when shipper is created...

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I have a client that just upgraded to SL 2011 SP2.  The system is now assigning the serial number on the shipper regardless of the issue method selected.  I see there is now and option for Do Not assign serial numbers at shipper creation for inventory.s4future09.

Even if I mark that as 1, the serial numbers are still assigned at shipper creation.  Any ideas?

I believe the SP1 HF was incorporated into SP2 (based on your experience with the way it is working).  I have not updated any of my sites to SP2 as of yet.  If your items are serialized, the "Do Not Assign Lot Numbers...: will not be active, since that is functionality only for Lot Tracked items.

If you do not want Serial Nbrs auto assigned on Shippers, you'll need to use the 'User Enterable" issue method and not the FIFO method for your serialized items.

Mark.  My client is on SL 2011 SP2.  Does that include this hotfix already?  We are able to key in the serial numbers to override what is selected on the shipper.  They do NOT want the system to auto assign the serial number, they want it to be keyed in for each shipment.  It doesnt look like the  "Do Not Assign Lot Numbers..." is not active currently.

    any advise?

Santhosh.  My client wants to use serial numbers.  the serial numbers are assigned when the item is received into inventory.  The issue method is User Enterable.  It used to be that the users would have to key in the serial number to confirm packing / picking.  Now SL is automatically selecting the serial number when the shipper is created.  So it is very easy to send the "wrong" serial numbers out.  How do they switch it so that the serial number is not automatically selected when the shipper is created?

The above issue was addressed with a Hotfix for DSL2011FP1; see below:

    mbs2.microsoft.com/.../KBDisplay.aspx

This HF auto-populates the LotSerNbrs into the Shipper screen when the Issue Method is set to FIFO (and the Assignment Method is set to "When Received into Inventory), which is how the Inventory documentation states that the FIFO Issue method should work (same concept as the FIFO costing method).

User Enterable is the only Issue Method that allows the user to define the LotSerNbrs that will be selected for Shipment (unless the "Do Not Assign Lot Numbers... option is selected in the Lot/Serial Nbr setup screen for the Item).

For those of us who obligated by Federal Regulations to track our items.

We had to go to the "Lot/Serial Number Setup" (10.250.01) from the "Inventory Items" (10.250.00) screen.  Then set the "Issue Method" to "User Enterable" as previously we had used FIFO and we where able to override the Lot/Serial number.  Now DSL 2011 does not allow you to select unless the item Issue Method is User Enterable.

    select LotSerIssMthd,* from inventory

    E;Expiration,F;FIFO,L;LIFO,S;Sequential,U;User Enterable

    Hi Jenni

Follow the below steps to avoid the Serial Number Formation.

    1) Open the Inventory Items Screen (10.250.00) under Inventory module and select that problematic Inventory ID

    2) Select the Lot/Serial Tracked option as "NONE"

    3) Save the Item and check it

If you couldn't Change the Value using Inventory Item Screen, then execute the below update query in SL application DB

Update Inventory  SET LotSerTrack ='NN' Where InvtID ='XXXXXXXXX'

    (XXXXXXXXX -> represents Inventory ID)

    Hope this Helps

    Thanks & Regards
