General Ledger Chart of Accounts Maintenance

We have an account in our chart of accounts that was set up with an incorrect account type.  We set it to 'income' and it should have been 'expense.'  The current GL month is the first time the account was used.  Can I change this account type?  When I tried to I got an error message about the account being in use by another part of the program.  Can I zero the account balance and then make the change?  Or do I need to move the dollars to a new account?

There are ways to accomplish this in the database, but it involves also changing the signs of GL Balances in History tables, which can get messy if proper care is not taken.  Best suggestion is your last question; create a new GL acct with the proper acct type, JE the old acct balance to the new acct, then set the old acct to Inactive.
