Business Portal upgrade error

I am upgrading from Business Portal. I installed Business Portal 5. I got an error in the installation that

Failed Loading Packager Data Element (PD_GP_COMMON) for Install Feature (BusinessPortal).

Command Line Used:

"C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\bin\MbfPackager.exe" Import /p:"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\Business Portal\Utilities\PackagerData\Common\UpgradeFrom4.0.2389.0.project" /i:Replace /l:"C:\Users\GREATP~1\AppData\Local\Temp\BusinessPortal\MbfPackager.Import.NoMerge.UpgradeFrom4.0.2389.0.project.xml"

The install completes but I cannot access the Business Portal. I get an error when I try to open the Business Portal. The error is that "An unexpected error has occurred".

I did a repair but that did not fix it. Reporting Services is not installed on this server.

Thank you. Jack

I logged into SQL and deleted the BusinessPortalUser from the logins and all company databases.  Then try the install again and that fixed this error.  It has an issue when moving to a new SQL server.

Most of business portal issues are hidden; the resolution for most of the errors is a matter for identifying the actual error logged in the temp folder. Once you identify the error you can solve any kind of issues by searching web as nothing couldn’t be found on the internet!

    Hi

I managed to fix my issue and it was done like Rob said to check the logs however I could not find the log he was referring to.  What I did was go to the temp folder and found a file called MBF1.2Install.log.  Open this file and at the bottom it reference an error with Web service initialisation error.  it referred to another log Webinitialization.log. In here I then found reference to the issue.  Basically BusinessPortalUser could not open Dynamics database due it being an orphaned user.  I ran sp_change_users_login Update_one....... and ran the install again for it to work.  Issue came about due to server move of SQL.  good luck on your quest

    Hi

I get the same issue, would love to know if you got round this in the end.  Double clicking mbfpackager.exe for me on its own brings up the same error

    kind regards

    Mickey

    Jack,

You should find more information in the file you list above (C:\Users\GREATP~1\AppData\Local\Temp\BusinessPortal\MbfPackager.Import.NoMerge.UpgradeFrom4.0.2389.0.project.xml).  Look in the file for additional troubleshooting information.

    Thanks

    Rob
