Create Item Code Using Product Template

Posted on by

Hi,

I'm new in AX2012R3. I try to create Item Code using Product Template (which is based on existing Item Code that have the correct setting). Once I apply the created template when create new code, this two fields is blank (Product Dimension Group & Inventory Unit). The other field was OK & correct.

Anyone can explain to me why this happen. I used to try select the other existing item code as a template, but seem like to be the same thing happen.

Is that both fields (mention above) will always blank so that user able to modify themselves.

    Hi Andre,

If I apply template when create a new product, only the Inventory Unit not filled correctly. Which mean, I need to select manually from the drop-down arrow.

Previously, other field (i.e: Item Sales Tax Group) also have the same problem, but I do noticed that the existing Item that is set as a template was not filled with Tax Group. Then I amend the item by put "SR" and set it back as template. Once I apply new created template to a new product, the Item Sales Tax Group field correctly filled.

Is there any possible way to check what fields involved and its value for the created template? Because, what I know we are not allow to amend the template but only can delete it.

    Hi James,

I was referring to the Inventory Unit. Is this field correctly filled in the template record? Note it is not taking the values from the current product tables, but at time of template creation a snapshot of the values was taken and stored as usage data for personal templates.

    Hi Andre,

Did you mean to check the existing Item Code (that to be set as template). If yes, indeed it was filled.

    I access using System Administrator.

    Hi James,

Can you check if the field is filled in the template? Can you also indicate if you have write access rights on that field/table? If you are testing with the role system administrator, you can ignore the last comment; then only check the template values. As it is a user template, the values are stored in your usage data.

    Hi Guy Terry,

    Thanks for your response.

For this time being, I only create Personal Template for testing purpose before make it as Shared Template once I found the correct setting needed.

For Inventory Unit, that's what I'm wondering how come it's not copy from template. It is because the existing code that I select as template have all the correct setting needed. Also, already try to use other item code as template but the same thing happen.

I'll continue work on this matter.

    Hi James,

I tested a product template. You're right that Product Dimension Group doesn't get set. If you choose Product subtype = Product master when creating the Released product, you have to set Product Dimension Group manually, even if you apply a template.

However, Inventory unit, which is also set on the 'Create product' dialogue box should copy from your template. If the template you created is a shared template, you'll be able to check it at Home -> Area page -> Setup -> Record template. I can't see how to do this if your template is a personal one.

By the way, there is a hotfix for R3 for the product template functionality, but as far as I know it is only to fix the behaviour of the 'Production type' field. The hotfix is KB 3015812. It was released in Nov 2014, and I would have thought it would be included in CU9. However, it is not specifically listed as one of the hotfixes in CU9, so I don't know what the deal is there.

    Hi Andre,

    Thanks for your response.

I believe for certain fields need to be entered manually even though template already created based on desired setting/configuration.

    Regards,

    James

RE: Create Item Code Using Product Template

    Hi James,

You had selected tags AX 3.0 and development, customization. It appears to be AX 2012 and Supply chain. I have corrected it for you.

When using the product templates, it is using record templates framework in the background. This template functionality can save default values for a set of records which are directly linked as datasource on the form. There are several fields like dimension groups which are presented on the form as display method. The field is then not directly a field on a datasource tied on the form. This explains why it is not filled when you apply the template. So some fields needs to be set manually or you have to create a customization. The dimension group can be set on global product level or item level. So it is not one single table; multiple tables are involved.  Also for this reason, there is a validation functionality, so you can evaluate if all fields related to the item are set correctly.
