How to access child business units on Dynamics 365

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help, I am very confused :-(!

We are currently running on Dynamics 365 Sales Professional license. By default we just have one parent business unit, however, we want to create a separate child business unit for another organisation working within our business.

The child business unit has been created, but I do not know how to access it within our Dynamics CRM. I have tried to access the environment via my user record.

When I try to add the environment as a team, I receive this error message;

I also tried to access the environment by changing the business unit within the 'Organization Information' box on my user, but received this message;

I basically want to be able to access a separate area within Dynamics which contains its own separate account/contact/opportunity records. I was hoping a child business unit could provide this for me.

I am also system administrator so should have full access to the system.

Thank you!

    Hey Ricardo,

It worked!! I had difficulty installing the sales application to the environment, however I created another new environment and selected only the 'Sales Pro' app and it installed perfectly.

I now have access to a separate D365 environment and this one does include opportunity as an entity.

Thank you for all your help & support.

    Hey Ryan,

Usually the 'BadRequest' error is related to problems during application deployment (probably due the combination that you selected). Please, try to deploy the environment using only Sales Enterprise or Sales app. It´s not necessary deploy sample data and even now you could try to install the Sales application in this environnment through Solution session.

    Please, check this article: docs.microsoft.com/.../manage-apps

    Let me know the results.

    Thanks,

RE: How to access child business units on Dynamics 365

    Hi Ricardo,

Update - I believe the reason for the error is due to the options I selected for 'Automatically deploy these apps'. I selected customer service & sales enterprise which were preventing the environment from saving. I removed these options, changed 'Automatically deploy these apps' from yes to no, and checked 'Deploy sample apps and data' as yes.

This allowed me to create the new environment, however I have just checked the customisation settings and again there is no opportunity entity again. I'm not sure what I am missing here? Something doesn't quite add up.

    Many Thanks,

    Ryan

RE: How to access child business units on Dynamics 365

    Hi Ricardo,

Again, thank you for your help with this.

I have followed the resources provided to create a new Dynamics environment. I am receiving this message once I click save to create the environment.

Multiple errors occurred: 'BadRequest,BadRequest'. Please see details. Request ID: de389eb1-5381-4f0d-a25f-12a75efe4666.

Do you know what this could mean or how I can workaround this error to get the new environment up & running?

    Any help appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Ryan

RE: How to access child business units on Dynamics 365

    Hi Ryan,

Correct, a user cannot be part of 2 different Business Unit. Keep in mind that BU is part of Dynamics 365 Security Model and helps administrator to control records accessing by privileges. Considering your scenario, if this 3 users only need access to the entities (not the records), the recommendation would be use another Dynamics 365 environment. If they need access to the same records, created by the other 17 users, or vice versa, the Business Unit must be configured accordanly.

Please, read this article about Security Concepts to understand more about the different security levels that can be configured based on BU, Roles and Privileges: docs.microsoft.com/.../security-concepts

Please, use this document as refenrece o create a Dynamics 365 environment: docs.microsoft.com/.../create-environment (this environment should has Opportunity entity if you install Sales app).

    Thanks,

RE: How to access child business units on Dynamics 365

    Hi Ricardo

Thank you so much for your reply.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, a user cannot be assigned to more than one business unit? If this can't be done then I do not think a child business unit is the solution for us.

We have roughly 20 users on our sales professional license. 3 of these users also need access to a new environment containing the same capabilities and default entities (account/contact/opportunity/lead etc). What would be your recommendation on how to set this up? Is it achievable?

Previously I created a complete new environment and mirrored the settings to match our main environment, however it turned out to be a PowerApps environment instead of Dynamics.

This environment would have been perfect for us, however for some odd reason it does not contain a opportunity entity by default and this entity is key to our business.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

RE: How to access child business units on Dynamics 365

    Hi Ryan,

Let me try explain some details about BU and Teams. When you create a BU or Child BU, a Team will automatically created (with the same name) and associated to this BU. When a Dynamics 365 organization is provisioned, the root BU is created and all users synched will be added to the root Team associated with this BU. So, if you create a child BU and try to add an user (that is already added in the parent BU), the first error will be displayed: "You cannot join one or more of the teams selected. The membership of default teams cannot be modified. If you contact support, please provide the technical details."

To overpass this error, access Configuration > Security > Users. Select the user that you want to add to the Team or Child BU and click on Change Business Unit (see image below):

    pastedimage1597185646980v1.png

After that, take note that now, user is inside the Child BU and was automatically added to the Team associated to this BU. The second error looks related to privileges, so make sure that your user is System Administrator. Also, you cannot move yourself from one BU to another(this action must be accomplished by other System Admin).

Please, check this document for more details: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/create-edit-business-units

    Thanks,

    Hi,

1)Go to dynamics admin center and verify the user that you are using have sufficient privileges

2)Login with Global Admin and try to change the related security related permissions.
