I have been putting this task off for some time, but now I need to face it and go ahead and do it. The company I'm working for has been using GP since the days of 7.5. To my knowledge, it has never been purged of any of the old data. Within the last 2 weeks, we moved our infrastructure into a Data Center and and installed a fiber connection from the Data Center to the office. As I had figured, the users are starting to complain that the speed isn't there like it used to be, which is true, because they went from a local 100 mbps server connection to a 20 mbps fiber connection to the Data Center.
Trying to aid in the situation, one of the daunting tasks I'm thinking that would help is to purge the database of transactions beyond the 7 year retention period, which would hopefully decrease the size of the database and the amount of data being passed over the fiber pipe. That being said, I'm not quite sure how to go about purging the data while making sure that everything stays intact historically.
Also, to add to the list, we are running GP 9.0 SP1, which puts us, what, about 12 SP's behind.
So, my questions are: How do I go about purging the old data and then bring GP current? We also are running Wennsoft as a 3rd party add on.
Thanks in advance.
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I didn't address the bring GP current question. This is not a problem, it will just take a while because you have to upgrade to an interim version that does upgrade to the current version. Also, take a look at your server's operating system version and SQL version. One upgrade path option is . Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 >> Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 or 2010 >> Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 >> Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 or 2016
Kind regards,
Leslie
Jeff,
I too am a big fan of the 'Company Data Archive', but if want to truly delete/purge the data, go to Utilities and 'Remove' the unwanted history transactions.
Kind regards,
Leslie
Hi Jeff, just came across your post... a few years too late :-)
Our team has used a tool from our ISV partner Professional Advantage, that archives old transactions nicely and provides access to previous years as a separate company. Performance improvements have been noticeable for users. Cheers Scott at Endeavour Solutions Inc. Toronto Canada
Jeff, are you running client-server with a remote server? If so, this combination is not recommended and will always result in slow performance. With a remote server, you need to be running via Terminal Services, Citrix, or the like.
Please check out Company Archive from Professional Advantage. This will alow you to create an archive company and move archive data into this company. This will great reduce the volume of records in your tables in the production compnay and will speed up porcessing.
I'm not sure even if you purge your data that you'll see much of an increase in speed...GP isn't meant to be ran remotely.
That being said, there are some third party products that will help you do what you want; we've used one from ProFad.
