How to Describe BC Development to Stand Out in the Software Engineering Field?

Hi all, a bit of a "non-technical" question but I'd really love to hear people's thoughts on this.

I am currently a BC developer for my job right now, so I am mainly working with AL. Most of my work involves modifying fields, tables, and pages in BC based on client requirements (a general BC developer), as well as report designing. I've also been able to experience collaborating with cloud tools like Azure Repos.

This has been my first real "tech" work experience, and so far I like the database-driven and client-side work you can do with AL. However, my goal in the near future is to take on a more general "Software Engineering"/Frontend/Backend position (intern or entry position).

My question is: How can I describe my experience in BC development such that I can appeal to companies hiring/looking for software engineers?

I am pretty much just trying to make my resume tailored for software engineering roles, but I am kind of unfamiliar with what terminology to use when describing my position as a BC dev. I'm not even sure if AL is considered a "backend" language or not lol (I'm a bit new to the game).

This community has been really helpful during my first couple of weeks of work so I just wanted to say thanks to everyone as well! Peace :)

Hi, just some small suggestions, I'm not very good at this either.....

I think you can highlight the experience of developing ERP systems.

Also, you can refer to some experts' profiles on LinkedIn.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

I would emphasis the business understanding you gain from working with a system like Business Central. If you can help bridge the gap between tech and business processes you will be an asset for a lot of employers.

It's been a long time but, when I first started, I also wondered how to tailor my experience. It's like finding the right language to describe your skills. I found that highlighting the problem-solving nature of BC development and your familiarity with AL can resonate well with companies seeking versatile software engineers. Remember, software engineering is all about adapting and learning new things, just like you're doing now.

My question is more like how do I describe what I want from the product if I don’t really understand development, or even what I need myself ?

    Hi,

I think you can highlight your following skills working as a BC developer.

1 - Understanding of Data base and Application layers for an ERP.
2 - Understanding of Business requirements and real world problem solving skills.
3 - Documentation skills you learned during your job.
4 - Your openness and flexibility to learn new languages and system and work with them.

I hope this will help you draft a good resume and land a good job/internship.

    Regards,
    Dhiren.

Having an idea is already more than half the job. You can have a problem, a request, an idea, a project, and with all of that or even with nothing at all you can come to developers who, after analysis, will suggest a solution or help you find one. I’m talking only about reliable development companies, for example, if you click the link to this site. Not having a clear understanding of how to solve business problems and tasks is normal. That’s exactly why specialists exist.
