Any ideas on this.  If I do not tick the re-importing box it tries to create an .xls file but nothing happens when I "Open", Save" or "Save As".  If I do tick it it successfull creates a.xml file provided I "Save As" and open from within Excel and do not try "Open"

Hi, Since your situation is vague, so I suggest you to start answering the below questions. It will help you to narrow down the situation and find out the root-cause.

How many records are you exporting?

On which entity record, is it happening?

On which Browser is it happening?

Is it happening on all client machines?

Is it happening for all the security role users?

    Thanks.

I am experiencing the exact same issue  - this is something that I have done many times before but this problem just started happening today.  I am not aware of any changes between today and when this worked yesterday.

    This happens:

    - From all entities

    - Whether I am exporting 1 row or many

    - Using Internet Explorer 11

    - I am a System Administrator who has full access to export records.    Another user who is also a System Administrator does not experience the issue.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

I found that it works if I tick the "Make this data available for re-importing" box.

I found this to,  but like you originally mentioned you then needed to save as an xml file and open from within excel.   This was frustrating when all I wanted to do was hit 'open' as I did previously.

I have actually found that changing a setting in Excel puts things back to how they were previously i.e. can export straight from CRM and have it open an excel spreadsheet

From within Excel I had to go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View.  From here all 3 options were ticked,  I had to untick the first 2 options:

Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet

Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations

I am still trying to understand what changed,  as I didn't manually change these settings,  but this has given me back the functionality that I require

FYI, I had the opposite situation to Lisa Williamson.

All three Protected View settings were ticked, and I was able to open extracts straight from CRM to Excel (with a soft alert from Excel that the format and extension did not match). However, when I changed my Protected View settings, Excel refused to open the file at all ('Unable to read file').

Conversely, when I ticked 'Make this data available...' and 'Open', the file opened as XML in IE!

Thanks a lot Lisa, you broke my Excel (just kidding).

I just thought I'd mention this as it seems that there are a few different scenarios out there. Incidentally, we are running CRM 201 OP, IE11 and Excel 2013.

I agree Brad,  this does seem to be specific to certain versions.

For reference,  this worked for me on CRM2015 OP, IE 11 and Excel 2016 through Office 365.
