Warehouse Shipment, Production Order, and Serial Number

Hi:

A Sales Order was entered and a Finished Production Order for the one line item was created.

Back when this Production Order was still in "Released" status, a Serial Number was assigned to the finished good.

In the Warehouse Shipment document for the Sales Order, however, a Serial Number still had to be chosen prior to shipping and posting.

Why?  Would the Warehouse Shipment not "know" what the Serial Number is for that one item?

    Hi

    You can potentially have multiple unique serial numbers for the same product. The system does not know which one was picked by the picker or assigned. Although in this scenario you happen to have one serial number only but think about when there are more than one.

    Hi, WhatWhyHow is right, this is a bit similar to purchasing, you enter Serial Number when posting purchase order, but you must also reselect Serial Number when posting sales order. So some customers will choose to customize the function of automatically assigning Lot No. or Serial No. . . .
