AR - Populate City/State With Zip Code Entry

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by 35

Has anyone seen a customization, ISV, or privately created add-on that would allow for the City & State to automatically be populated after a zip code is entered.

Anyone with any thoughts about this your post is greatly appreciated!

Thank you

If you have Customization Manager, this is pretty easy.

I just downloaded the sample file for the "Standard Database" ($39.95) from zip-codes.com.

I put the first three columns of that data into a new table in an application database, after removing duplicate rows for the same zip code.

I then created a simple customization on screen 08.260 (AR Customer Maintenance), using the check events of the Postal Code fields.

For some ZIP codes, the city migbht not be possible.  In the Queens borough of  New York City, for example, has a wonky setup where the "city" is actually a neighborhood, and some of the ZIPS overlap.

I would think that some small towns might also be part of another city's post office (or do you always use the post office ity?)

I used to live in a town where the post office (with its own ZIP code) was in our town but it was considered a branch of the neighboring city's post office.  The post office certainly didn't care whether mail was addressed to the town or the city (which we were not actually in), but we thought it less confusing to name the town when giving our address.  When I'm speaking with service reps who are entering my address, they often ask for my ZIP code and then verify the city with me after it pops up on their screens; kind of a mix of high and low tech, because I could hear them typing in what I told them when the city was "wrong."

The database I found (above) did have multiple entries per five digit ZIP, with multiple CityAliasNames for some cities.  (Unfortunately, it includes names that the USPS considers "acceptable" and ones that the USPS considers "not acceptable," with no way to distinguish between them.)  I removed all but what the USPS considers the "actual" city.  One could instead retain the "duplicates" and add some code to set the List property of the city field when more than one city is found: that would make a PV with cities for that ZIP code.  One could also code a message box for when a ZIP code is changed and the city is populated with a name not on the list.

Yes, I agree.  Another issue is that if you are using the address to actually drive there, and trying search in one of the online mapping services, it's difficult to get to the right place, sometimes without THEIR city-designation for the location.
