Label Wizard Error: "You must select a valid Start Row and Start Column" after selecting a Label Format

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Been working for years, until I reformatted my PC & reinstalled every thing fresh for same RMS 2.0.0126.  I installed "SQL Server 2005 Express" then upgraded to "MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Express".  Everything works fine in SO and POS except that I cannot change the grayed-out "Start Row" and Start Column" numbers in the Label Wizard in SO  They are stuck on "1".  Clicking Next, triggers the previous error and cannot move forward.  The same exact error occurs when I attempt to use Labels inside Item Properties window.  It has been boggling my mind for the last few days.  Help is appreciated.

See attached snapshot of the error message.

    Thanks Jeff,

I'm in total agreement and that is exactly what I am doing. everything looks like it should work but it doesn't. I don't have further time to work on this so will use the network location as a store for customized labels and copy to the default path on C: for now.

Note these are Win7 64 bit PC's so I'm not sure if there is a system issue that is coming into play.

That's all we use, no sense in pushing reports/labels/templates to each device.

A simpler way of dong this, is on the Server, create a folder in the root of the drive instead of the Program Files folder, with all its security issues, copy the RMS reports/labels/templates etc. folders to it, share it and point to it on all machines,  You still need File and Printer sharing turned on, but no other security issues to deal with.

Is anyone else using a network location for customized label files with success?

    Thanks for the suggestion.

The drive mapping is confirmed and we can actually see/select the labels in the left pane. It is pretty obvious when the path/mapping is incorrect as you do not see the contents of the label folder.

I am wondering at this point if the system needs to create a temp file for printing and can't do so. I have checked permissions for the LABELS folder (all users = MODIFY) and even tried running as an admin with the same results.

Sounds like you are not connected to the drive/folder properly.

Drop to a command prompt and type Net Use <enter>  See if the drive/filder says it connected or not.  If not, either type net use /? or Google it for more help with the command.

FWIW, we create a batch file with the proper command in it and create a shortcut and stick it in the start-up folder to run on every re-start.

I have a similar problem that produces the same error message but in different circumstances.

In my case I am pointing the label path under Store Ops Admin to a network location (so we only have to have customize labels in one location). When doing so I get the same error, and do not see a preview of the label (but do see label formats listed).

When I point the path back to the default C: drive location it works fine. The path & security permissions on the network location have been double checked, and F&P sharing confirmed as enabled.

    Anyone else run into this?

Eureka...  I just stumbled over the resolution of labels printing in RMS Store Operations Manager:

    In Windows 7 go to:

Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

Under "File and printer sharing" press on the radio button "Turn on file and printer sharing"

Press "Save changes" at the bottom of the screen.

Start SO Manager and start generating/printing item labels.

My special thanks to Ed Boyer and Jeff Hobbs for getting me to focus attention to the "printing" issue rather than the "Labels Wizard" itself issue.

    Jeff:

The drop database worked fine.  Thanks for the tip.

On the other hand, I am lost when you say " when on the label pictured screen"!  Which screen you mean? Thank you,

RMS SO Admin has an issue dropping databases in SQL2k8 and above.  Just select the Master database instead of the store's when logging, then select the database to delete and nuke it.

You may have a printer paper issue where when RMS is trying to print a label, it has the wrong paper size.  Double check this by clicking the printer preferences icon, next to the printer icon when on the label pictured screen
